Giving Tuesday the new Black Friday?

Giving Tuesday the new Black Friday?

Several large chains closed their doors on Black Friday in order to encourage family time and discourage the shopping craze that usually accompanies this “celebration.” Chains such as Nordstrom’s, Costco and Sam’s Club are examples of those who participated in this new trend. Benefits include good PR and happy employees.

Larger brands are also trying to encourage Giving Tuesday. Meant to replace or cancel out Black Friday, this new movement aims to start the holiday season on a note of giving instead of buying. Companies like eBay are participating in a match scheme where everything donated monetarily by consumers is matched by them.

I applaud these brands for standing out and doing something that they feel will make a difference. The new Giving Tuesday sounds great! Hopefully the sentiments portrayed by these movements will catch on to other companies next year.
